Kinetic Type Animation

This is a kinetic type animation created in Adobe After Effects for Visual Narrative Systems, a class I took in Spring Semester 2022. The goal was to visualize the theme and feeling of the song accompanying the animation. It features hand-drawn and digital elements to help create the narrative of a Wild West fantasy described in country singer Miranda Lambert's song If I Was a Cowboy.

The rough look of the hand-drawn elements gives the animation a rugged and wild feel, which I believe matches the theme of the song. Obviously, I chose to incorporate Western ideas like rope, chunky slab serifs, stars, horseshoes, a sheriff's star, a wanted poster, and more to bring the Wild West narrative to life.
Here, amongst other places within the animation, I used type as image. In this example, I created the shape of a pistol for the line mentioning holsters.
In addition to using type as image, I used animation to bring the type to life. Since Miranda's singing in this song is similar to a kind of yodeling, I wanted to create a back and forth, almost wavy movement in the text, as that is how I visualize the way one's voice acts while yodeling. I contrasted this wavy energetic type with bold, still type to keep that hard cowboy feel but also make the animation exciting.
